Physical Education

We aim to develop a lifelong love of sports and physical activity. In PE it is our intent to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that gives every learner the opportunity to participate in physical activity in adult life. We aim to instil in pupils the knowledge and provide them with the skills to enable them to make informed choices in relation to leading an active and healthy lifestyle. Pupils are made aware of links and the transferable skills and tactics within activities.

Pupils are taught how to warm up appropriately for physical activity and to follow relevant rules and safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for all.

PE provides may opportunities to develop well rounded citizens and we are committed to developing the leadership qualities of all our pupils. This in addition to the social and moral values taught through sport and physical activity. For example, pupils are able to develop empathy through evaluating the work of others.

We support the development of self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and helping pupils to cope with both success and failure in competitive and co-operative situations.

We aim to ensure that lessons for pupils are engaging, so they will develop a thirst for physical activity and be inspired to attend additional opportunities to participate outside lesson time. Opportunities will be provided for students to take part outside lesson time at both a recreational and a competitive level, within the SPANN competitions.

Pupils are also given the opportunity to develop their awareness of careers in the sports industry through links with external agencies and extra curricular opportunities.

Through our teaching of PE possible curricular links are exploited, particularly links with Maths.

Providing pupils with the skillset to make informed choices about their health and to lead a healthy active lifestyle, whilst developing their love of physical activity and sport, will increase their life chances and give all the opportunity to become good citizens. Our philosophy is ‘be the best you can be’.

Key stage 3


Pupils should build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in key stages 1 and 2, become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and apply them across different sports and physical activities. Activities studied include football, rugby, basketball, badminton, handball, hockey, gymnastics, softball, athletics, rounders and cricket. Pupils should understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work. They should develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life, and understand and apply the long-term health benefits of physical activity.

Key stage 4



Pupils should tackle complex and demanding physical activities. They should get involved in a range of activities that develops personal fitness and promotes an active, healthy lifestyle.



An OCR National in Sports Studies is also available at Key Stage 4.
